Michael Mann Vindicated (Again) Over Climategate

via Slashdot by Soulskill on 8/25/11

An anonymous reader writes "Michael Mann, a climatologist at Pennsylvania State University, was one of the central figures involved in the 'Climategate' controversy, which saw many private email conversations between researchers posted publicly. Now, an investigation (PDF) by the National Science Foundation has found "no basis to conclude that the emails were evidence of research misconduct or that they pointed to such evidence." Phil Plait points out that other investigations have found similarly that claims of Mann's misconduct took his statements out of context. 'A big claim by the deniers is that researchers were using "tricks" to falsify conclusions about global warming, but the NSF report is pretty clear that's not true. The most damning thing the investigators could muster was that there was "some concern" over the statistical methods used, but that's not scandalous at all; there's always some argument in science over methodology. The vague language of the report there indicates to me this isn't a big deal, or else they would've been specific. The big point is that the data were not faked.'"

TV: Newswire: Most online daters say they like 30 Rock in order to get laid

Hah!

via A.V. Club on 8/24/11

In the olden days, attempting to date via classified ad was a tedious process of pretending to enjoy eating dinners in crappy lighting and trudging along a shoreline, all in order to convince someone that you were worthy of sex. But thanks to the influence of social networking, now it’s just a matter of selecting the right combination of pop culture signifiers to advertise yourself. And what works of other people's art are most men and women using to define themselves in order to snare a mate? If the New York-based users of dating site OKCupid can be ...

Humanoid Robot Wakes In Space, Tweets

Spaaaaaaaaaace!

via Slashdot by CmdrTaco on 8/24/11

DeviceGuru writes to note that "Robonaut 2 (aka R2), the first humanoid robot to become a permanent resident of the International Space Station (ISS), was awakened from stasis this week after six months in orbit. R2s first words? 'Those electrons feel GOOD!' The success of R2's activation on the ISS paves the way for putting R2 through its first movements in orbit on Sept. 1, when R2 will be sent commands for moving its arms and hands. Assuming these and other tests proceed without a hitch, R2 will start assisting the ISS crew with simple tasks in 2012. Coffee? Tea? Cigarettes?"

AT&T Eliminates All Texting Plans Except Unlimited

Wow, I gotta get out of this abusive relationship. Pray the FCC kills the T-Mobile/AT&T deal

via Android Phone Fans by Quentyn Kennemer on 8/18/11

If you are looking to switch to AT&T soon, be warned that you won’t be able to get a minimal texting plan if you aren’t the heaviest of texters. Today, they’ve confirmed that they are axing the metered texting plans and will only offer unlimited plans – you either pay per text (which get extremely pricey if you aren’t careful) or pay the $20 or $30 for unlimited texting on individual and family plans, respectively. Anyone currently with AT&T is grandfathered into their old texting plans, of course. [Engadget]

Music: Newswire: AC/DC has its own line of wines now

Yeah, I think we all did the "Whole Lotta Rosé" thing when we heard this...

via A.V. Club on 8/17/11

At a certain point in the life of every rock band, you begin to slow down and appreciate the finer things, like the simple joys of a nice bottle of wine that you can put your name on and sell to diehard fans and ironic types who want to be funny at dinner parties. We’ve seen it happen to Whitesnake, we’ve seen it happen to Train, and now even AC/DC is capturing its essence in a bottle—choosing wine, presumably, because Coors Light already exists. The Australian rock group has teamed with the Warburn Estate for a ...

What did Stringer Bell do wrong?

via kottke.org by Jason Kottke on 8/3/11

A great question over at Quora: What were the biggest tactical mistakes that Stringer made in Seasons 2 and 3? Why did he make these mistakes?

5. Not using a knowledgeable intermediary to deal with Sen. Clay Davis. He was clearly out of his league with Davis and had he used an attorney with the correct political connections, he could have likely gained all that he sought with fewer complications than he did.
