Santorum Calls Democrats 'Anti-Science'

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

via Slashdot by Soulskill on 2/21/12

ndogg writes with news that Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum has counterattacked those critical of conservative views on science, saying that they're 'anti-science' themselves. From a CBS report: "In his remarks Monday, Santorum went beyond his usual discussion of the importance of increasing domestic energy production to deliver a blistering attack on environmental activists. He said global warming claims are based on 'phony studies,' and that climate change science is little more than 'political science.' His views are not 'anti-science' as Democrats claim, Santorum said. 'When it comes to the management of the Earth, they are the anti-science ones. We are the ones who stand for science, and technology, and using the resources we have to be able to make sure that we have a quality of life in this country and (that we) maintain a good and stable environment,' he said to applause, and cited local ordinances to reduce coal dust pollution in Pittsburgh during the heyday of coal mining."

TV: Newswire: Fox is pulling the plug on House

OH THANK GOD

via A.V. Club on 2/8/12

Confirming what many had suspected and occasionally even suggested out loud to their television screens, the current eighth season of House will indeed be its last. The show’s creative staff (via the network) issued a statement announcing their decision with what appeared to be a heavy heart, which was then properly diagnosed at the last minute as indigestion. “The producers have always imagined House as an enigmatic creature; he should never be the last one to leave the party,” it reads in part. “How much better to disappear before the music stops, while there is still some promise and ...

No Pardon For Turing

Terrible

via Slashdot by samzenpus on 2/6/12

mikejuk writes "A petition signed by over 21,000 people asked the UK Government to grant a pardon to Alan Turing. That request has now been declined. A statement in the House of Lords explained the reasoning: 'A posthumous pardon was not considered appropriate as Alan Turing was properly convicted of what at the time was a criminal offence. He would have known that his offence was against the law and that he would be prosecuted. It is tragic that Alan Turing was convicted of an offence which now seems both cruel and absurd-particularly poignant given his outstanding contribution to the war effort. However, the law at the time required a prosecution and, as such, long-standing policy has been to accept that such convictions took place and, rather than trying to alter the historical context and to put right what cannot be put right, ensure instead that we never again return to those times.'"

Film: Newswire: R.I.P. actor Ben Gazzara

NO

via A.V. Club on 2/3/12

Ben Gazzara, one of the great character actors of his generation, has died of pancreatic cancer at the age of 81. A product of New York's Lower East Side, Gazzara grew up speaking the language of his Italian-immigrant parents and had to learn English as his second language. He caught the acting bug while still in his teens, but only signed up at the theater program at The New School after a stint studying electrical engineering at City College didn't pan out. In 1951, he joined the Actors Studio at a time when it was the hottest incubator ...

Film: Newswire: Gasland director arrested for trying to film Capitol hearing

via A.V. Club on 2/1/12

Capitol Police arrested Gasland director Josh Fox earlier today, as the filmmaker behind the Oscar-nominated documentary on the dangers of shale gas drilling—and “fracking” specifically—attempted to tape a public hearing on the technique that was being held by the House Science Committee. Fox is currently prepping a sequel to Gasland, and said in an interview following his release that he had attempted to get clearance to film the meeting, which focused on a recent EPA report regarding the contamination of a Wyoming aquifer from nearby hydraulic fracturing. After failing to get a response, Fox and a videographer showed ...
